Spray Tans & Your Period: What to Know
Among the many annoyances that menstruation brings, less-than-perfect spray tans are one of them. Yes, you can definitely get a spray tan while you’re on your period, but there’s a few things you should know that affect its results.
1. Can You Get a Spray Tan While on Your Period?
Yes! There are no medical restrictions, but you may notice:
Increased Skin Sensitivity: Hormonal changes can make your skin more reactive, leading to uneven absorption or sensitivity to spray tan solutions.
Faster Fading: Due to hormonal shifts, your body may exfoliate faster, causing your tan to fade quicker.
Water Retention & Bloating: Your body might hold more water, making your skin texture slightly different.
2. Tips for a Successful Spray Tan While on Your Period
Wear a Tampon or Menstrual Cup
If you’re concerned about discomfort or leaks, using a tampon or menstrual cup is recommended.
If you wear a pad, let your spray tan technician know, as the adhesive might interfere with the tan in that area.
Prep Your Skin Well
Exfoliate & Shave at least 24 hours before to ensure smooth application.
Moisturize leading up to your appointment, but not on the day of to avoid streaks.
Choose a Comfortable Outfit
Loose, dark clothing is always recommended, but you may feel extra bloated or sensitive, so opt for breathable, relaxed-fit outfits.
Avoid Hot Showers & Sweat
Your body temperature is higher during your period, which can cause sweating and affect the spray tan development.
Stick to lukewarm showers and avoid tight underwear or leggings for the first few hours.
3. Will Your Spray Tan Look Different During Your Period?
Hormonal changes might affect how the tan develops on your skin. Some women notice:
A slightly lighter tan due to faster skin cell turnover.
Uneven absorption in drier areas like knees, elbows, and ankles.
No major difference at all—it varies from person to person.
If your tan looks patchy or fades quicker than usual, it might be due to hormonal fluctuations rather than the tan itself.
