Toxic Skincare: The Skincare Brand That’s Anything But
At a time when every beauty brand on earth is overusing the marketing buzzword “non-toxic,” Toxic Skincare’s (@toxicskin207) founder Jessica Stuart decided to throw caution to the wind and name her spray-tan-safe brand Toxic Skincare. But not for reasons you may assume. When one thinks of toxic skincare, ingredients like formaldehyde and mercury may come to mind. And while those are definitely not in Toxic Skincare’s ingredient list, Jessica’s inspiration for the brand’s name came from her own personal (some may say a little “toxic”) anecdotes she tells her spray tan clients during their appointment to distract them from any feelings of discomfort.
“My clients stand [in the tent] naked and that’s a pretty vulnerable place to be. [So] I’m not going to 21-question them —that’d be stressful for me — so I just tell people these embarrassing or crazy stories about me.” While some beauty service providers may choose not to touch on taboo topics during appointments, Jessica actually started seeing more success in her business when she did. “When I first started my business I was really careful, I didn’t want to offend anyone, but really I am who I am. I started seeing so much more success when I started acting like myself and telling people how I really felt. I never hold back” she explains.
Toxic Skincare’s “Boss Babe” Body Butter
Jessica recalls having honest and relatable conversations with clients about things like mental health issues, victories and losses, getting ghosted by guys, and having a few too many drinks during a night out. So when it came time to name her line of spray-tan-safe products, she drew inspiration from these exchanges she had with her clients. That’s why you’ll find foaming cleansers and body butters with names like “Day Drinking,” “Boss Babe,” and “Manic Episode".
However, contrary to the scientific meaning of “toxic,” Toxic Skincare’s products are anything but. Each body butter and foaming cleanser is handmade, contains 0.1% fragrance, balances the skin’s pH levels, and is thoughtfully designed to only contain necessary ingredients — no filler. Oh, and did we mention safe for sunless tans? Meaning, your tan will last longer when you use these products. “The mission of toxic skincare is to only use ingredients that are necessary for the products’ function and are good for your skin,” shares the founder. “I wanted to create a product that’s good for spray tans and nourishes your skin, and as a result; nourishes the tan.” That’s why both products use key ingredients like sheabutter, glycerin, and rosehip oil to nourish and protect the tan.

And nourish and protect the tan they do indeed. I tried Toxic Skin’s body butter in “Krispy” and the sheabutter-based moisturizer works like an armor for the tan. It goes on thick yet soaks into the skin quickly and leaves skin feeling hydrated and soft all day long. But not too soft to where the tan becomes vulnerable to fading. Instead, it creates a barrier between your tan and environmental stressors to make for nourished skin and a long-lasting tan. As for the foaming cleanser, its whipped texture makes it so fun to apply yet is safe to use all over your body— whether you have a tan or not. What’s more is that each product’s scent lives on the skin long after applied in a way that is pleasant and subtle — not overpowering.
