Color Theory & Spray Tan Bronzers Explained
There are two types of bronzers in sunless solutions: cosmetic bronzers and DHA bronzers. Each serve their own purpose when it comes to developing a color-correcting spray tan. Here’s a look at how both type of bronzers work:
Cosmetic Bronzers (Instant Color)
If a solution has a color-correcting green, violet, blue, or red base, it’s usually in the cosmetic bronzer.
The color base in the cosmetic bronzer is what you see immediately and lasts for two to three days after application.
These pigments act as a guide for even application, give an instant tan, and work with the skin’s natural undertones to create a flawless tan.
DHA Bronzers (Long-Lasting Tan, Develops Over Time)
DHA reacts with amino acids in the skin to produce the final tan color, but the undertone of the developed tan is influenced by the solution’s formulation.
Some solutions include color-correcting undertones in the DHA formula to ensure the developed tan leans golden, deep brown, or cool-toned rather than orange.
This is why some spray tans continue to develop in a balanced shade even after the cosmetic bronzer fades away.
Here’s Color-Correcting Bronzers Work:
Green-Based: Neutralizes Red, Best for Fair to Medium Skin
Violet-Based: Balances Yellow/Golden Tones, Best for Olive or Warm Skin
Blue-Based: Counteracts Orange, Best for Medium to Dark Skin
Red/Bronze-Based: Adds Warmth, Best for Deep Skin Tones
