How did you get started in the spray tanning industry, and what inspired you to open your studio in Grays Harbor County?
“I've always loved having a tan, whether that meant getting a spray tan or self-tanning at home. I knew I wanted to get into the beauty industry, and spray tanning felt like a natural fit because I know firsthand how something as simple as a glow can make you feel more confident.
I've also lived in Grays Harbor County for the majority of my life, so when I decided to create The Glow Babe Co, it was important to me to build it here in the community I call home.
When I created The Glow Babe Co, I knew I wanted the experience to be about much more than getting a tan. I'm a breast cancer survivor, and going through treatment gave me a very personal understanding of what it feels like to be vulnerable. There were moments during treatment when I realized just how much the way you're made to feel matters when you're already feeling vulnerable, and that stayed with me.
That experience became part of how I built The Glow Babe Co. I understand that being naked or nearly naked in front of someone can feel incredibly vulnerable, and I never want a client to feel uncomfortable or self-conscious in my studio. I wanted to create the kind of space I would want to walk into—private, welcoming and judgment-free, but also elevated, beautiful and professional. This is a beauty service, and I believe it should feel like one. You should be able to relax, feel a little pampered and walk out feeling confident in your glow.”
Tell us about your studio and the spray tanning services you offer throughout Grays Harbor County.
“The Glow Babe Co is a private spray tanning studio located in Montesano, Washington, inside Mood Beauty Lounge. I offer three levels of custom spray tanning, so clients can choose the level of service that best fits their needs. I also offer specialty services, packages and memberships for clients who want to make their glow part of their regular routine or are tanning for a specific occasion.
My clients come to me for everything from an everyday glow and vacations to weddings, pageants, photoshoots and special events.
My goal was to create a space that feels elevated and beautiful while still being welcoming and comfortable from the moment you walk through the door.”
What makes your spray tans and client experience different from other spray tan studios in Grays Harbor County?
“For me, it's not just about the tan—it's about the entire experience. It starts before a client even steps into my studio with a detailed consent form that helps me understand their skin, tanning history, sensitivities and what they're looking for. For first-time clients, we always have a consultation before we begin. With returning clients, we talk about what they're tanning for and whether we're recreating a color they already love or choosing something different for a particular event or occasion.
I've been very intentional about the experience inside the studio as well. It's chic, inviting and professional, but most importantly, I want people to feel comfortable. I offer different service levels that include details that can really elevate the final result, from skin prep and hydration to finishing powder and additional finishing products depending on the service selected. I'm also very particular about blending and those small details that help make a tan look natural.
I want my clients to feel like I've thought of everything for them. The tan matters, but how you feel while you're in my studio—and when you walk out—is just as important to me.”
How do you customize each spray tan to your client's skin tone, desired color, and lifestyle?
“It really comes down to communication because there isn't one solution that works for every client. I look at their natural skin tone and skin type, but we also talk about what they consider their ideal color. I'll even have clients show me photos of themselves with a previous spray tan or naturally tan during the summer so I can see whether they gravitate toward something softer and golden or deeper and richer.
Then we talk lifestyle. When do they want to rinse? Are they working out and sweating regularly? Is this an everyday glow, a vacation, a special event or a pageant where they need more depth of color for the stage? I carry different solutions for different needs, so I can customize both the color and the formula to the person in front of me.
My goal isn't to give every client my version of the perfect tan—it's to understand their version of it and create that for them.”
What products or spray tan solutions do you use, and what do you love about them?
“I work with several professional sunless brands, including NUDA, Bronze Me Baby, ALT SUN, and Unfiltered. I carry both rapid and classic solutions because I don't believe one formula is right for every client. Different skin tones, desired colors, lifestyles and rinse times can all influence what I choose.
What I love is the versatility. Each solution line is unique and brings something different to my studio, which gives me the flexibility to choose what I feel is the best fit for each client. I also really value the relationships I've built with the brands and their reps. Having knowledgeable people I can reach out to, ask questions and continue learning from is incredibly valuable to me.
I'm constantly educating myself and testing products because the sunless industry continues to evolve. I want to understand why I'm choosing a particular formula rather than simply using the same solution on everyone.”
What types of occasions do Grays Harbor clients typically book you for?
“Honestly, all of them! Bridal tanning has become a really special part of my business. I love working with brides and being trusted with something that will be photographed and remembered forever. I also see clients for vacations, engagement and senior photos, homecoming and prom, pageants, birthdays, special events—and plenty of clients who simply love how they feel with a glow.
I'm also the Official Spray Tan Artist for the Miss Grays Harbor Scholarship Organization, which has given me the opportunity to work with young women in pageantry. Pageant tanning has its own unique needs. We're creating enough depth for stage lighting while also thinking about longevity, since competitions can last more than a week and re-spraying isn't always possible. The product knowledge I've gained and the relationships I've built with the brands and reps I work with are especially valuable here because I understand what I can rely on to help that color perform and last throughout competition week.
One of my favorite things about spray tanning is that there really doesn't have to be a special occasion. Sometimes the occasion is simply wanting to feel good.”
What's your best advice for getting the most natural-looking, long-lasting spray tan?
“Prep and aftercare matter just as much as the appointment itself. In the sunless industry, we often say a great tan is 50% the spray tan artist and 50% the client. I ask my clients to exfoliate, remove any unwanted hair prior to their appointment and arrive with clean skin free of lotions, deodorant and oils. Every client leaves with a prep and aftercare card, and I write their customized rinse time directly on it so they know exactly when to rinse.
Once the tan develops, hydration is key. I recommend a tan-safe body wash, consistent moisturizing and avoiding unnecessary exfoliation, hot tubs, chlorine and prolonged water exposure when possible. I carry affordable professional prep and aftercare products in the studio, but I'm also happy to recommend options clients can find at places like Walmart or Costco. For me, it's not about where you buy your products—it's about giving you the knowledge to properly care for your tan.
And when it comes to a natural-looking result, natural doesn't have to mean light. Some clients love a soft glow and others love a deep, rich tan. It's about choosing the right solution and depth of color for the individual so their tan looks intentional, even and beautiful on them.”
