How did you get started in the spray tanning industry, and what inspired you to open your salon in Bethesda?
“I started spray tanning over five years ago in Los Angeles. I loved seeing how something as simple as a spray tan could completely change the way someone felt when they looked in the mirror. It was never just about being tan. It was about confidence.
I eventually moved to Maryland for love, bringing my business with me and basically starting over in a place where I didn’t know anyone. I had some savings in the bank, so I decided to take a chance, try spray tanning full time, and go all in. It was scary, but it ended up being the best decision I ever made.
From there, I built Bronzed Beauty Bar in Bethesda and focused on creating a more customized and personal experience where clients feel comfortable, cared for, and confident in their results every time.”
Tell us about your salon and the spray tanning services you offer.
“Bronzed Beauty Bar is located in Bethesda, Maryland, and we serve clients from all over the DMV.
We offer custom airbrush tans, hydration tans, sweat-resistant tans, DIOSA Brazilian tape tans, contour tans, vacation tans, and bridal tanning. We also offer teeth whitening, permanent jewelry, tooth gems, and piercings.
Bridal tanning is a big part of our business. Our bridal packages include a trial and the wedding-week tan so we have time to figure out the perfect color and make sure the bride feels completely confident before her wedding day.”
What makes your spray tans and client experience different?
“We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all spray tans. Every appointment starts with a conversation about the client’s skin tone, undertones, tanning history, event, outfit, and how they want to look.
Our goal isn’t always to make someone as dark as possible. It’s to create a color that looks natural and makes sense for them.
I also care a lot about making clients feel comfortable. Standing undressed in front of someone can feel intimidating, especially during your first spray tan. We work hard to make the experience private, welcoming, and completely judgment-free.”
How do you customize each spray tan?
“We look at the client’s natural skin tone and undertones, then talk about how subtle or deep they want their color.
We also consider what they are getting sprayed for, what they’re wearing, how quickly they need the tan to develop, and whether they’ll be sweating, swimming, traveling, or taking professional photos.
From there, we choose the solution, depth, rinse time, and any add-ons that make sense for their skin and lifestyle.”
What products or spray tan solutions do you use, and what do you love about them?
“We mainly use Glazed Sunless because their solutions give us so much flexibility when customizing color and development time. I love being able to mix different solutions and create a color that works for each individual client instead of using the same formula on everyone.
We recently added X-Tan Sunless to our lineup, and it has been such a huge hit with our clients. It’s a premium solution that gives the skin a rich, beautiful bronze while still looking natural. It also gives us even more options when choosing the right undertone, depth, and development time for each client.
Between Glazed and X-Tan, we can create anything from a very subtle glow to a deeper vacation tan. We also offer hydration and sweat-resistant options for clients who need extra support based on their skin, lifestyle, or upcoming plans.”
What types of occasions do clients typically book you for?
“We tan clients for weddings, vacations, birthdays, homecoming, prom, galas, photoshoots, fitness events, and date nights.
We also have plenty of clients who come in with no special occasion at all. Sometimes you just want a spray tan because it makes you feel good, and that is reason enough.”
What’s your best advice for getting a natural-looking, long-lasting spray tan?
“Preparation and aftercare matter just as much as the application.
Exfoliate really well at least 24 hours before your appointment and arrive with clean skin. No lotion, deodorant, perfume, or oils. Afterward, follow your artist’s rinse time, moisturize every day, avoid overly hot showers, and pat yourself dry instead of rubbing.
Also, don’t forget to exfoliate and moisturize your neck, chest, and underarms. Those are the areas people tend to forget!”
What advice would you give someone getting their first spray tan?
“If it’s your first spray tan, don’t overthink it! You don’t need to know which solution or shade to choose before coming in. We’ll ask questions, listen to what you want, and guide you toward the best option for your skin and plans.
A lot of first-time clients worry about looking orange, getting too dark, or feeling awkward during the appointment, and we completely understand. Making people feel comfortable is just as important to us as the final result.”
