How did you get started in the spray tanning industry, and what inspired you to open Faux Melanin Spray Co. in Murfreesboro, Tennessee?
“I started about 15 years ago working in several tanning salon chains, and as a more fair skin type, I always struggled to get the level of color I wanted. Enter spray tanning. Realizing I could get as much or as little color as I wanted in 15 minutes once a week changed the game for me.
In all this time, the technological advancements in solutions, equipment, and accompanying products have created so much better return on investment for both artists and clients alike. Now I can tan my clients every 10 to 12 days, customize color, and it’s a much easier routine to uphold.”
Tell us about Faux Melanin Spray Co. and the custom spray tanning services you offer throughout Murfreesboro, Smyrna, and Walterhill.
“I operate out of a custom-built private studio at my house off of Jefferson Pike, close to 840. I’m nestled right in between these three communities but with zero traffic, so it is quiet, convenient, and private. It’s an oasis.
I love every single client who trusts me with their skin, but my heart lies with my melanin-rich clients. Medium to ebony skin tones are often overlooked and underrepresented, and the glow that deep skin serves after a spray tan is unmatched. I also recently launched Brazilian Tape Tans, and those are SO FUN!”
What makes your spray tans and client experience different from other spray tan salons in Murfreesboro, TN?
“I am so controversial here because I believe that a lot of us have a very similar approach: be yourself, keep learning, and consistently give attention to detail, and your clients will be happy.
There are so many amazing artists everywhere, but the thing that makes us different is how we vibe with our clients and our ability to adapt. That’s where I typically get the most compliments and what makes me the best at what I do.”
How do you customize each spray tan to your client’s skin tone, desired color, and lifestyle?
“This skill has been honed over many years and is second nature now. Ultimately, a short, thorough consultation and the right supplies on hand are my not-so-secret secret to success.”

“Ooooh, I love this question! I am always searching for improvements to FMSC, but right now I’m using Nuda, Altsun, and Glazed solutions.
I’m carrying a curated mix of products that are tried and true to provide hydration and longevity—Casita Glow (dry oil is to die for), Sainte Cacao (DHA-infused body wash is GOAT), and Nuda.”
What types of occasions do clients typically book you for—weddings, vacations, photoshoots, special events, or an everyday glow?
“Honestly, it is a mix! I regularly tan bridal parties, models/news anchors, women going on vacay who want to look their best, and mamas who just want to keep a healthy glow throughout the year and do something fun for themselves!”
What’s your best advice for getting the most natural-looking, long-lasting spray tan?
“The key to success for almost anything beauty/aesthetics is what you do at home before and after. Consistency.
If you don’t follow prep instructions and use hydrating and tan-safe products afterward, you will never get the result you’re looking for.”
